Xcode: Product > Archive is greyed out

When developing an application for macOS or iOS you may have noticed that in some cases the Xcode menu entry Product/Archive is simply greyed out and can’t be clicked. As such you won’t be able to publish your app in the appstore.
Fortunately there is a simple workaround for this issue. Simply switch the build mode from iPhone Simulator to Generic Device:
