VLC lags

Today I tried to view a video without unpacking it. The VLC mediaplayer is capable of doing that and I played the video directly from the rar archive.
I scaled the video in order to cut the black borders around the movie and after doing so it started to lag a lot. Closing all other applications running in the background didn’t really improve the playback.
So I simply updated VLC mediaplayer and the problem was fixed.
